Principal's Message

Welcome to Waiau Elementary School’s website. Please take time to browse through the different pages and links. As you browse you will see that we believe all students can learn at high levels in an environment that is caring and nurturing with a curriculum that is rigorous and engaging.

We believe in educating the whole child as we get our students college and career ready. We offer a rigorous and engaging K-6 Language arts, math, science and social studies curriculum as well as music and PE. Targeted students also take classes in our enrichment/intervention block. Enrichment courses focus on critical thinking, problem solving, leadership, and performance while intervention courses focus on deeper understanding of language arts or math. We also have a multitude of clubs and activities which include chorus, ukulele, violin, media, robotics, basketball, track, book club, JPO, student council and math olympiad.

The learning that occurs at Waiau is the foundation that our students will need in order to be successful after they leave us. We are a part of the Pearl City Complex and we work closely with Highlands Intermediate and Pearl City High School to ensure our students leave high school college and career ready. To assist in accomplishing this goal, Waiau is certified as an AVID elementary school. We use school wide strategies that address organization, note taking and critical thinking. These strategies will be continued and expanded on as our students move to Highlands Intermediate and Pearl City High School.

Along with a rigorous and engaging English program of study, Waiau proudly has a Hawaiian Language Immersion (HLI) program. Students in our HLI program are held to the same high standards as our students in our English program but learn the content through the Hawaiian language and culture. Our Kumu in the HLI program are well versed in the Hawaiian language as well as the common core state standards that all students must learn.

We understand that it takes a village to raise a child. We encourage parent participation and pride ourselves in keeping the lines of communication open between the school and home. We consider our school as part of the community, not separate from it. We have an active School Community Council (SCC) as well as a dedicated Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

I am proud to be the principal of Waiau Elementary and am privileged to work with our students, parents, and staff. Have a great year!!

Sincerely,

Troy Takazono
